Tree Species Composition

The majority of Slovenian forests are located in the areas of beech, fir-beech, and beech-oak forests (70%), which have relatively high productive potential.

Among the tree species in the growing stock, beech (32.9%) and spruce (30.1%) dominate. They are followed by fir (7.4%), oaks (7.1%), pines (5.4%), other hardwoods (8.5%), and noble broadleaves (5.4%). In total, broadleaves account for 56% of the timber stock, while conifers make up 44%.

The tree composition varies significantly across different regions of Slovenia, as the growing conditions are highly diverse. Beech predominates in the growing stock in the Dinaric region and in eastern Slovenia. Conifers dominate in the northern part of Slovenia (Pohorje, Julian Alps, Kamnik-Savinja Alps) and in high plateaus (Pokljuka, Jelovica, Mežakla), where spruce is particularly dominant in the growing stock.
