ThinkForest European Forum on How to Respond to Forest Disturbances in Europe

The ThinkForest Forum was held in Prague on April 4th 2019. Director of the Slovenia Forest Service, Damjan Oražem, presented how the Slovenia forestry profession confronted the trauma that has affected Slovenian forests in recent years.

The ThinkForest Forum is part of the European Forestry Institute (EFI) and is chaired by Göran Persson, who has been the Prime Minister of Sweden for 10 years, and has successfully built bridges between scientists and environmental policymakers, especially forests. The meeting, which was held at a high professional-political level, was attended by more than 150 participants from 48 countries. Beside the Czech Minister for Agriculture, event was attended by representatives of many ministries, various professional institutions, the general public and the media.

Forum participants discussed topics related to current problems and the future of forests. The presentations and debates were marked by the exchange of knowledge, experience and cooperation, as the processes that take place in forests today are not just a matter for individual countries or only for foresters. They take place at a regional or global level and must be dealt with on an equal scale. European forests make up 5% of the world's forests, providing as much as 20% of carbon dioxide (CO2) sinks - a testimony to their utmost importance in mitigating the effects of climate change in Europe and in the world.

At the invitation of the organizer, the rich Slovenian experience in dealing with natural disasters was presented by Damjan Oražem, Director of the Slovenia Forest Service, as an example of good practice. The Prague Forum forms the basis for a ministerial conference in 2020, which aims to ensure a common European forestry policy for the benefit of forests and society in the future.
